College Graduate School

The Graduate School undertakes the vital role of co-ordinating postgraduate research activities leading to award of higher degrees within the College of Medical & Dental Sciences. Our overriding objective being the provision of the best possible training environment to young biomedical scientists. Birmingham has an excellent track record in this respect, offering a wide range of training opportunities in all aspects of biomedical science ranging from state of the art molecular genetics and cell biology to patient-directed gene therapy, with students working typically with world leaders in their field.

In order to optimise the processes of recruitment, registration, supervision, appraisal and examination of graduate students within the College of Medical & Dental Sciences, each of the Schools within the College has a dedicated Director of Graduate Studies, supported by one or more Co-ordinators, who together take responsibility for appointment, supervision and monitoring of graduate students. Each student is assigned one or more supervisors and a mentor, the latter having a remit to deal with pastoral, as well as academic, issues. We provide formal training elements open to all graduate students to underpin the specific research training and experience you will enjoy. The School Officers join me, and student representatives, in comprising the Graduate Studies Committee which meets regularly to discuss and monitor all of these activities.
